NIS will start automatically when the system is brought up in multiuser mode (run level 2) and TCP/IP is started. The /etc/tcp startup script will invoke the NIS startup script /etc/nis, which has been initialized with the correct NIS configuration by ypinit.
You can also start NIS from the command line
by logging in as root and entering:
/etc/nis start
The first time you start a copy-only server, it will display messages similar to the following as it transfers maps from the NIS master:
Transferring proto.nam . . . map2ascii conversion for proto.nam map succeededSome map conversions, specifically for the passwd and group maps, will fail in Secure Mode.
To stop NIS on a machine, log in as root and enter:
/etc/nis stop
When you stop NIS on a server, clients bound to the server will hang if this was the only server serving the domain. NIS is shut down automatically when the system is taken to run level 0, 1, or 6.
