The panner

The ``panner'' contains a map of your entire workspace.

The ``grid'' divides the map into a number of rectangular regions (work areas). You can choose to make the grid invisible.

Each work area represents a screen-sized area of the workspace. Use the work areas to group and organize your windows.

The ``map'' represents your windows by small rectangles (symbolic windows). These show where your windows are in the workspace. Each symbolic window is also labeled with the title of the window it represents.

The panner functions as more than a map. You can also use it to:

• check which part of your workspace is currently shown on the screen (your view area) indicated by the position of the viewfinder on the map

• navigate around the workspace (change your view area) by moving the viewfinder across the map. You can move to a new work area or you can choose a view area overlapping several work areas. Windows that are ``nailed'' stay on the screen when you change the view area in the workspace. The panner and the icon box are nailed by default.

• find windows in your workspace using the labels on their symbolic windows

• find the currently active window (shown by the symbolic window outlined in red)

• move windows around the workspace by dragging their symbolic windows across the map
